Baker was the only living recipient at the time of the ceremony. As of November 2019, the most recent African-American service member to receive the Medal of Honor was Marine Sgt. Major John L. Canley for his actions during the Battle of Hue in January-February 1968 in the Vietnam War.
Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter were both given the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1999. George H. W. Bush was given the award in 2011, and Bill Clinton in 2013. Joe Biden received the medal in 2017 when he was vice president, and is the first president to receive the medal before their presidency.
